GENESIS® Announces Greg Andrews As Tile Faculty Advisor

For the last 20 years, Andrews’ work has been focused almost exclusively on pool tile installation. He joined the GENESIS® team as an instructor more than 10 years ago and has taught a wide variety of courses, from pool tile and coping to waterproofing methods. Attendees of Coverings 2023 will be able to explore more than 400,000 square feet of exhibit space with numerous global pavilions hosted by the world’s leading tile associations and product manufacturers. Coverings 2023 will host exhibitors from more than 30 countries, displaying the most sought-after tile, stone, tools, equipment, machinery, and other resources. Over 20,000 attendees from all segments of the industry will be able to connect with exhibitors to explore and discover new and trending products onsite at the most preeminent tile and stone industry marketplace in North America.

“Coverings is expanding its 2023 show to include an even broader range of special programs, beneficial resources and experiential activations than in the past,” said Jennifer Hoff, CEO of Taffy Event Strategies, the event management company for Coverings. “New, stimulating programming and partnerships, show floor tours, live installations in the Coverings Lounge, growth and networking opportunities, programs for fabricators, and many other activations will contribute to a curated Coverings experience for distributors, retailers, fabricators, contractors, specifiers, architectural and design professionals, builders, and all segments of the industry.”

The Coverings Lounge at this year’s show will provide a centrally located and comfortable space for attendees to gain professional knowledge, network with peers, hear from industry leaders, and attend happy hours featuring valuable prize giveaways. The four key tenets of Coverings 2023 – “Health & Wellness,” “Sustainability,” “Outdoor Spaces,” and “Timeless Luxury” – will be focal points of the Coverings Lounge. Each tenet will be highlighted through live demonstrations, displays, relevant market trends, and numerous hands-on activities to provide showgoers with custom, memorable experiences that highlight the innumerable benefits and uses of tile and stone.

The “Health & Wellness” tenet will be promoted in the Coverings Lounge through short mindfulness workshops led by Gianna Vallefuoco, an artist, National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) Five Star contractor and mindfulness teacher with Vallefuoco Contractors, LLC. These sessions will be appropriate for all attendees, including meditators and non-meditators alike, teaching participants how to better deal with stress on the job site, discover how breathing can help deescalate heated moments and learn how to use a growth-focused mindset to overcome obstacles.

The Coverings 2023 “Sustainability” tenet will be highlighted, in part, by the return of the Sustainability Wall, which will be on display in the Coverings Lounge to showcase the environmentally friendly properties of ceramic tile. This popular show floor feature will be updated from the Coverings 2022 edition to educate attendees on the countless sustainable benefits of ceramic tile and tile’s advantages compared to other surface materials.

D.W. Sanders Tile & Stone Contacting will be working alongside Coverings to underscore the “Outdoor Spaces” tenet in the Coverings Lounge. Woody Sanders and his team will showcase a raised pedestal system by dismantling and rebuilding it each day, so attendees can see and learn how the advantageous system works. Pavers for this project have been donated by Atlas Concorde.

The “Outdoor Spaces” theme will be further showcased in the Coverings Lounge through an outdoor seating area, featuring biophilia walls with comfortable chairs to provide a relaxing, conversational environment for networking, while also taking in the essence of tile’s seamless integration in outdoor settings among plant material and outdoor furnishings.

The “Timeless Luxury” tenet will be featured in the Coverings Lounge to highlight the ways in which tile is a premium offering with impeccable quality that delivers emblematic and experiential value in addition to functionality. Exhibitors from Ceramics of Italy, Tile Council of North America (TCNA) and Tile of Spain will display beautiful and luxurious tile installations that will be used as the wine and beer bars during the happy hour events. Photography of luxurious projects will also be displayed on a large screen in the Coverings Lounge to showcase this significant market trend.

The Coverings Lounge will also be the center for complimentary Contractor Tours and theCoverings 2023 Rock Star Awards.Emerging, young professionals will be honored at the 2023 Rock Star Awards Ceremony and Reception, April 18 from 4-5 p.m.

Happy hours will return as a much-anticipated favorite among showgoers at the event. This beloved Coverings feature will occur in the Coverings Lounge April 18, 19 and 20, starting at 4 p.m. Cold drinks and valuable giveaways from TCNA and NTCA member companies will be available to those present, offering attendees a fun way to interact and wrap up their show days.

On display in the Coverings Lounge will be “Wally the Gator,” a 6’ x 4’ Florida gator-themed mosaic tile project designed, built and installed by the tile artisan team of Lee Callewaert of Dragonfly Tile and Stone Works and Joshua Nordstrom of Tierra Tile. This awe-inspiring tile art was created live and streamed during Coverings 2021 and is making a first-time appearance in Orlando, Florida, for Coverings 2023.

New to Coverings 2023 is the Distributor Lounge, sponsored by the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association (CTDA). This new addition to Coverings will provide a quiet place to meet near the show floor for tile, stone and flooring distributors. Light refreshments and snacks will be served in the lounge, which is conveniently located at the top of the South Hall escalators in room S222 (also called the Destination Lounge).

The Coverings 2023 show floor will also include a special display that will be of particular interest to architect and design attendees known as the Art Tile Village. The Art Tile Village, located next to the Coverings Lounge in the TCNA Pavilion, will include a range of aesthetically pleasing tile art designed by local and regional tile experts. This space will be dedicated to artisans who keep old-world traditions alive by crafting handmade art and specialty tiles.

Attendees visiting the Art Tile Village will find one-of-a-kind decorative tiles and accents that can give any project a distinctive and unique touch. Several interactive demonstrations about pre-mounting techniques, forming, decorating/glazing, and hand painting will be featured in the area so attendees can learn more about the craft.

The Podcast Studio, acclaimed by many Coverings attendees, is expected to be an extremely popular feature at Coverings 2023. The studio, located in the South Hall Lobby, will offer established podcasters across the tile, stone and construction industries a unique opportunity to record episodes during Coverings 2023. Showgoers, no matter their interest or favorite genre, can stop by the studio to listen in as podcasters record new episodes for their respective shows.

The PHTA recently announced standards revision of APSP-16 and APSP-1 and issued a call for committee participation.

(Alexandria, Va.) – The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) kicked off its 40th year as a standards developer by announcing the review and revision of ANSI/APSP/ICC-16 2017 American NationalStandard for Suction Outlet Fitting Assemblies (SOFA) for Use in Pools, Spas and Hot Tubs and ANSI/APSP/ICC-1 American National Standard for Public Swimming Pools and calling for subject matter expert (SME) participation in the Standard Writing Committees (SWCs). The APSP-1 Standard would be redesignated as the PHTA/ICC-1 Standard for Public Pool and Spa Design, Construction and Installation.

Once formed, over the next months, the SWCs will meet bi-weekly to review and consider revision to the standards for consideration by PHTA’s ANSI consensus body. SMEs who would like to serve on an SWC must be willing and able to actively participate in the language drafting process and have a working understanding of the current standard. Interested parties who may not be SMEs or active users of the standard are welcome to attend meetings as observers throughout the revision process.

Stakeholders are invited to apply to serve on the PHTA-16 and PHTA-1 SWCs. The appointment criteria seek to establish a diverse SWC ensuring reasonable balance without dominance by a single interest category, individual, or organization. Priority will be given to applicants from the various interest categories with experience using, applying, and enforcing the ANSI/APSP/ICC-16 2017 and ANSI/APSP/ICC-1 2014 standards.

The PHTA-16 SWC will revise the standard establishing materials, testing, product marking, and installation instructions governing product use for new or replacement drain covers. The standard is the federal regulation for all bather-accessible Suction Outlet Fitting Assemblies (SOFAs) that are designed to be fully submerged for use in any pool, which include, but are not limited to, a swimming pool, hot tub, spa, portable spa, swim spa, non-portable wading pool, storable pool, or any other aquatic venue intended for swimming or recreational bathing.

This standard is the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Standard referenced in the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGBA) and for this reason any revisions must be reviewed and approved by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) before the revised standard can be accepted as the successor standard to ANSI/APSP/ICC-16 2017. The CPSC has the responsibly to determine if proposed changes are in the public interest.

For the PHTA-16 SWC, PHTA is seeking SME participation from certifying bodies and Registered Design Professionals (RDPs) who currently test and certify or previously tested and certified SOFAs in accordance with the standard. Other important stakeholder categories include, but are not limited to, SOFA manufacturers, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), and installation professionals who work closely with AHJs to assure public pools’ suction systems conform to the standard.

The PHTA-1 SWC will revise the standard establishing provisions which apply to the construction, alteration, movement, renovation, replacement, repair, and maintenance of aquatic venues, public pools, and public spas. The public pools and spas covered by this standard are either permanent or temporary and shall be only those that are designed and manufactured to be connected to a circulation system and that are intended for swimming, bathing, or wading.

For the PHTA-1 SWC, PHTA is seeking SME participation from stakeholder categories that include, but are not limited to, building officials, health department officials, contractors, pool service and maintenance providers, architects, engineers, RDPs, equipment manufacturers, distributors, retail vendors, chemical suppliers, instructors, trainers, standards organizations, and others interested in participating in the revision process.

Completed application forms are due to PHTA by January 27, 2023. For more information, visit theParticipate in the Process webpage or phta.org/standards, or email PHTA Program Director of Standards and Technical Services Genevieve Lynn at [email protected] .

(Albany, NY) – Governor Kathy Hochul of New York signed AB8646 into law on November 23, creating a path for spa and hot tub owners to safely meet state barrier requirements through the use of ASTM 1346 compliant safety covers. This is the same requirement as found in the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) and the next edition of the International Property Maintenance Code.

The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), the International Hot Tub Association (IHTA), and the Northeast Spa & Pool Association (NESPA) played an integral role in the passing of this law. The three associations, along with PHTA’s New York-based public affairs firm, held meetings with the staff of both Governor Hochul and previous governor Andrew Cuomo, New York Department of State regulators, and legislators on this topic. All parties agreed that a statutory change was appropriate.

“This update to New York law ensures that the state will now harmonize with the ISPSC and other state codes on the issue of spa cover requirements,” says Nathan Coelho, Chair of the IHTA Engineering Committee and Vice President of Engineering at Master Spas LLC. “This is a significant win for spa owners and the industry.”

The legislation was passed unanimously by both the New York State Assembly and New York State Senate before arriving on Governor Hochul’s desk. It went into effect immediately on November 23 after the signing.

For more information, please contact Amy Willer, PHTA’s Associate Director of Marketing and Communications, at [email protected]  or 703-838-0083, ext. 121.
