Oppo Enco X2 review: Best wireless earphones under Rs 10,000 - Technology News

Oppo has launched the successor to the Enco X wireless earbuds in India, which was already one of the best options under Rs 10,000. With the new Oppo Enco X2, the company has made significant improvements in Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), audio quality, and battery life to offer better performance. But, with that, the price has also been increased by Rs 1,000 compared to its predecessor. The good thing is it is selling for less during Flipkart and Amazon sales.

The latest Enco buds have retained support for wireless charging, IP rating, and LHDC audio codec, which is nice. Oppo has also added support for LDAC Bluetooth codec for a high-end audio experience. Having said that, is the Oppo Enco X2 true wireless earphones worth your money? Let’s find out.

Oppo has made almost no changes in terms of design and I believe there was no need either. You still get the round oval-shaped case. It has a very compact form factor and lightweight design, which makes it easier to carry it anywhere. One can easily shove it in their jeans pocket, which is something that is not possible with some of the wireless earphones in the market due to a bigger and heavy form factor.

The case is sleek, but less durable. The build quality is not up to the mark. I accidentally dropped the case on road and it got some dents. The case is prone to scratches as well. So, you need to be a little careful while using it. The case has a flip-up hinge design, similar to many wireless earphones out there. This one has a metal hinge on the back of the case, which is seemingly very sturdy.

Oppo has incorporated a pairing button on the right side of the case, which is hidden well. The case has only one light for indicating battery status, which is pretty useful. There is a small Oppo branding on the top of the case, which is not very prominent and is placed in a subtle way. This is nice. The company also managed to emboss its Oppo logo on the earbuds, which is directly not visible to the naked eye. The case has a USB Type-C port, so one can use their phone’s fast charger to quickly top up the battery of the case, which is now slightly bigger than the previous version.

What I liked most about the Oppo Enco X2 is the fit. It just fits snugly into the ears and because it has a lightweight design, you won’t really feel that you are wearing it. I used the earphones for a month and never for a second had any issue with the fit. It never felt like the earphones would fall off the ears. I have tested a bunch of wireless earbuds in the past, but this one is the best and will likely offer a good fit to most users. One can comfortably wear it all day.

Oppo ships a bunch of ear tips to let you find the right fit for your ears. The default tip size suited me well and I didn’t have to change the tips. The earbuds are also IPX5 rated, so they are dust and water-resistant. So, people don’t have to worry about the earphones getting damaged during rainy reason. But, I will still suggest you to be careful. Both the earbuds and the case are made out of plastic, but they never felt cheap.

With Oppo Enco X2, I can say that the connectivity is just seamless. There was never a time when I had to reconnect the wireless earphones to my phone. The moment I took out the earbuds, they would connect even if the connected device is not close enough, which is nice. During my usage period, I didn’t experience any connection drop. The setup process is very simple and it doesn’t take more than 15 seconds to pair the earbuds with the phone for the first time.

Oppo has a dedicated HeyMelody app that lets you customize the earphones as per your preference. But, those who have an Oppo or OnePlus phone, they don’t need to download this app, as people will be able to access the functionalities of the app in the Bluetooth settings. This is nice, but it becomes a little annoying at some point. Since there is no app, you can’t keep it open in the background. So, every time you need to make any changes, you will have to go to Bluetooth settings > find the name of the earphones, tap on it and then tap again on Earbuds function.

I liked the fact that this one doesn’t have touch controls on the buds. This is because when you sleep one-sided, the earbuds automatically activate any set function. With Oppo Enco X2, you just need to squeeze the stem single, double or triple times for different functions. The app offers controls for play/ pausing music, adjusting volume as well as ANC, and summoning a voice assistant on your smartphone.

The app support is just great as Oppo has provided a lot of features that help make your experience seamless. You can click photos using the earphones by double tapping any earbud. There is also a dual-connect feature that lets you connect the earphones to two devices simultaneously, which is a much-needed feature that you don’t get with some of the earphones in the market. Other features are Find my earbuds, Earbud fit test, and Golden sound. The last one is basically a test that helps offer a better sound experience based on your ear's capacity and hearing characteristics.

The Bluetooth settings are by default set to SBC, but one can change it to LHDC or LDAC if their phone supports these codecs. In case you don’t find LDAC, then you will see it in the app’s High-quality audio section, where you can switch to a different Bluetooth codec. Furthermore, there are two ANC modes, including Noise Cancellation and Transparency. There is no way to manually set noise cancelation level, but Oppo has provided different modes like Max, Mild, Moderate, and more. Similarly, the company hasn’t given proper Equalizer to make changes to a track manually and you get some modes. Though, they don’t make a major difference.

The Oppo Enco X2 is one of the best sounding wireless earphones in the market and it is currently available for less than Rs 10,000 on Flipkart. It comes with dual coaxial speakers with 11mm dynamic drivers and 6mm planar diaphragm drivers. The earbuds have support for different Bluetooth codecs, including SBC, AAC, and the high-end LHDC. Oppo also added support for Sony’s high-res LDAC codec with an update. If your smartphone and the music streaming app support LDAC Bluetooth codec, then you will get a greater sound experience. This doesn’t mean that you won’t get a good sound quality with AAC codec.

The Enco X2 offered a well-balanced sound experience and solid performance in bass-heavy tracks. The bass was well defined and it didn’t overpower other frequencies. The treble did bring out finer details in some of the tracks and I got fuller sound with detailed mids. I can say that the earbuds have a pretty wide sound stage. One will likely enjoy listening to some of the electronic, pop, and Bollywood songs. There is no custom preset equalizer setting for a more personalized experience. Though a lot of people might not even use it, which might be the reason why Oppo didn’t offer it.

There is support for Active noise cancellation as well on the Oppo Enco X2, but it is not very effective compared to Soundcore Liberty Air 2 Pro. The new earphones did cancel out most of the background noise, but they couldn’t cut out high-pitched sounds. I put the ANC to Max mode to cancel out most of the unnecessary ambient sound.

But, the impressive part is the noise cancellation for calls. There were a lot of times when the background noise was very high that I couldn’t hear my voice while on call, but the other person was able to hear with utmost clarity with close to no background noise. This is just great.

The wireless earphones lasted for 3 or 4 days with the case. I used the earbuds for calls and listening to music with ANC. The usage was around 3-4 hours at least on a daily basis. So, the battery life is impressive as well. One can use Qi-compatible chargers for wirelessly charging the earbuds. But, this takes longer than usual to charge the battery. I would recommend people to charge the case using their phone’s fast chargers.

The Oppo Enco X2 is a complete package and its performance justifies the high price it is selling for. The wireless earbuds are capable of offering good sound quality, long battery life, and decent ANC. The noise cancelation for calls is really good. It is well built and fit is also great, which makes it one of the best options for around Rs 10,000. While the official price is Rs 10,999, the earbuds are currently selling on Flipkart for Rs 9,999.
