Apple finally announced the second generation of Apple AirPods Pro. It’s a refresh of the original AirPods Pro that was revealed in October 2019.

The AirPods Pro 2, aka AirPods Pro 2nd generation, was unveiled during Apple September Event 2022, where Apple also revealed the new iPhone 14 series, and the new Apple Watch series, including the all-new Apple Watch Ultra.

The AirPods Pro 2 does not have a visible design change. It’s still the same in-air headphones with silicone ear tips that feature an acoustic vent system to equalise pressure. The 2nd generation AirPods Pro now comes with a new, extra small ear tip, in addition to small, medium, and large ear tips.

The charging case sees a few useful changes. Now, Find My app can also precisely locate AirPods Pro. Using a U1-enabled iPhone, you can use Apple’s precision finding to locate it. But sadly, it will not work in Nepal as the ultra-wideband technology required for it is not supported in Nepal.

The charging case of the new AirPods Pro 2022 now has a built-in speaker at the bottom of the case. The speaker will signal pairing, low battery, and when charging has started, or play louder tones to locate.

To help you not lose it, the case also includes a loop to let you attach a lanyard. And, lastly, both the charging case and earbuds are IPX4 sweat- and water-resistant.

The AirPods Pro 2 is equipped with a new H2 chip, which is a performance upgrade to last year’s H1. The earbuds provide more detail and clear sound with a “new low-distortion audio driver and a custom amplifier.”

The active noise cancellation (ANC) is also better than ever. The new earbuds cancel up to double the amount of noise over the original AirPods Pro, thanks to H2 chip, acoustic vent system, and microphones.

The transparency mode is also improved, utilising on-device processing capability of H2 chip. With adaptive transparency, the earbuds can intelligently reduce loud environmental noise like the sound of construction tools. Apple mentioned that this is made possible because the chip processes at 48,000 times per second.

We already know the spatial audio feature, Apple’s virtual surround system, that was introduced with iOS 14 in 2020. This year, with the launch of AirPods Pro 2, Apple introduced personalised spatial audio. Actually, this is not something unique to AirPods Pro 2 but is a feature that comes with iOS 16.

Using the TrueDepth camera on iPhone, you can create a personal profile for Apple’s spatial audio. Then, based on your profile — i.e., the shape and size of your head and ears, the AirPods Pro will deliver a listening experience precisely tuned just for you.

Now, with touch control on AirPods Pro 2, you can adjust the volumes by simply light swiping up and down on the stem.

Previously, the stem only featured a force sensor that allowed play, pause or skip tracks, and switch between active noise cancellation and transparency modes. Apple says the built-in skin-detect sensor is also now more accurate.

With a single full charge of the earbuds, you will get up to 6 hours of listening time with ANC enabled, according to Apple, which is 1.5 hours longer than the first generation.

The new charging case will extend the battery life to provide up to 30 hours of listening time with ANC enabled. The case can charge the earbuds fully up to four times.

The charging case of the AirPods Pro 2nd generation now also supports Qi-wireless charging, in addition to a lightning cable for charging.

The Apple AirPods Pro 2 price in Nepal is expected to be around Rs. 40,000. After it launches in Nepal, it will be available at Apple authorised stores.

The Apple AirPods Pro 2 is a successor of the first generation of Apple AirPods Pro that was launched three years ago. The earbuds look the same from the outside, but a lot of improvements have been done internally.

The earbuds now support touch controls and it is now powered by a new H2 chip, which enabled them to have better sound, improved ANC, adaptive transparency, and longer batter life.

The charging case is also redesigned. It now has a built-in speaker, lanyard loop, support for wireless charging, and IPX4 rating against sweat and water.
