LG's Tone Free T90 face strong competition in the premium earbuds segment, including from the Pixel Buds Pro. Here's how both earbuds compare.

The LG Tone Free T90 are a compelling pair of earbuds, but how do they compare to the Pixel Buds Pro? LG earbuds are not as popular as those from brands such as Apple, Sony, and Samsung, especially now that LG has shut down its mobile phone business. Nevertheless, the company's products still manage to offer enough features to stand out from the crowd. For example, most of its earbuds come in a round clamshell-like case that can function as a Bluetooth transmitter and can also sterilize the earbuds using UV light.

While Google hasn't launched as many earbuds as LG, its earbuds are pretty popular. So far, the company has only launched three models with the Pixel Buds Pro being its first premium model. They pack features expected of earbuds priced at $200, but like LG, have several competitors, some of which offer similar features for a lower price tag. While others competing products cost a bit more, they tend to come with additional features that give them an edge.

These two earbuds are closed-fit headphones and that's pretty much the only similarity in terms of their appearance. LG's earbuds have stems like the OnePlus Buds Pro while the Pixel Buds Pro are stem-less. The Free Tone T90 are the lighter model with each earbud weighing 5.1 grams which likely means they can be worn for longer before becoming uncomfortable. In contrast, the Pixel Buds Pro weighs 6.2 grams per earbud. LG and Google state their earbuds have an IPX4 water-resistant rating which means they are designed to survive sweat during workouts and to be worn in the rain. However, only the case of the Pixel Buds Pro has any form of water-resistance (IPX2). The Pixel Buds Pro earbuds are available to buy in four color options while the Tone Free T90 come in two colors.

Both pairs of earbuds have 11mm dynamic drivers, touch controls, adaptive active noise cancellation, a transparent mode, and support for Dolby Atmos. However, the Tone Free T90 have four microphones for better ANC whereas the Pixel Buds Pro only have three. While Google says its earbuds will receive an update in the future that adds support for spatial audio, the Tone Free T90 are the first Dolby Atmos earbuds with Dolby Head Tracking across all content, including games.

The Pixel Buds Pro connect via the old Bluetooth 5.0 standard while the Tone Free T90 have Bluetooth 5.3, resulting in a longer range and better power efficiency. Both earbuds support Audio Switching, Bluetooth Multipoint, and Google Fast Pair. However, LG goes further by adding support for Microsoft's Swift Pair for instant pairing with PCs running Windows 10 and later. Both pairs of earbuds are designed to work with Android and iOS devices but only the Tone Free T90 have a companion app for both platforms. In contrast, the Pixel Buds app is only available on Android. In addition, LG's earbuds have a pretty useful feature called Plug & Wireless that allows owners to connect them to devices without Bluetooth support, or devices that are not typically designed to work with earbuds like treadmills, in-flight entertainment systems, and game consoles. All they have to do is connect the charging case to the device's AUX/USB port using a USB-C to 3.5mm/USB-A/USB-C cable and their earbuds will begin to work with the device. LG's charging case also has a UV-C light that sterlizes the ear gels.

Like the Pixel Buds Pro, the Tone Free T90 have support for wired and wireless charging. LG claims the earbuds will provide up to 9 hours of usage (with ANC off) and go up to 29 hours with the charging case. There is support for fast charging with a 5-minute charge providing up to 60 minutes of playback. Google's Pixel Buds Pro delivers up to 11 hours of listening time (7 hours with ANC turned on) and a total of 31 hours with the case (20 hours with ANC on). The Pixel Buds Pro also supports fast charging and Google claims that a 5-minute charge will provide up to 60 minutes of use. At $199, the Pixel Buds Pro are the cheaper option, and they are also the better earbuds in terms of battery life as well. However, the LG Tone Free T90 earbuds justify the higher $229 price with a handful of useful features you won't get with the Pixel Buds Pro.
